What is the ERAC Authorised Representative?
In Australia and New Zealand, the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC) requires manufacturers or suppliers of in-scope electrical equipment to register that equipment under the EESS for regulatory compliance. If a company is located outside Australia or New Zealand, it must appoint a local entity to act as its Authorised Representative. This representative takes legal responsibility for ensuring that the product meets all relevant safety requirements, including compliance with Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) requirements.

Do I need an Australian entity to sell electrical products here?
To sell in-scope electrical equipment in Australia you must be — or must appoint — a Responsible Supplier with an Australian Business Number, registered in the national EESS database. An overseas manufacturer with no Australian presence appoints a local entity to act as its Authorised Representative and hold that role.
What does the Authorised Representative actually take on?
The representative takes legal responsibility under Australian law for the compliance of the products registered under it. That is not an administrative formality, which is why we review the evidence base before accepting the role — we need to be satisfied the products are compliant, not merely that the paperwork exists.
How long does EESS registration take?
Registration itself is quick once the underlying evidence is in order. The time is almost always spent upstream: confirming risk level, obtaining or updating a certificate of conformity for Level 2 and Level 3 equipment, and correcting label markings. We assess that gap first so the timeline is realistic.
